I guess I'm sick of these most of these guys being scared of old bikes.  I try to get some advice from a different forum and I knew they would give me the answer I didn't want to hear.  I really want to get into working on my own bike more and have been slowly getting into it with little mechanical knowledge I have but I love motorcycles and want to learn.  I'm an avid reader of The Horse, Cycle Source, and the similar mag's and love there attitude. Here's my question for you guys.

Okay, I have a 2007 Road King Custom. I owe about $11,500. I've been contemplating on trading for an older bike. I'm looking at a 1993 Dyna Wide Glide with 36,000 miles on it for $8500. The stealer said they would give me $14,500 for the King. I miss having a carbed bike and don't even care about the 80 ci evo. If I wanted 150 hp at the rear wheel, I would buy a KTM Superduke. Money is one issue, since I took a pay cut upon getting out of the Army, and wanting to work on my bike more is one, and just having an older bike to keep the old stuff alive is one more. With all the electronics and EFI on the King, it's kind of intimidating to work on. I love my Road King but as I said, I miss having a carbed bike and I also think the Dyna would fit my 6'2" 205 lb frame better and I would love it just the same, if not better. I know it's obviously up to me but I figured I would see what you guys think.

alright- hopefully i stopped you before you took the plunge. i think 8500 is too much for that dwg. obviously, i don't know if the motor's been redone or not, how it runs, or looks. but there are better deals.

okay you asked and you know what they say about opinions.a 93 aint really very old, aint a pan or shovel etc. 85,00 is a good pice for a newer bike at least out here in the southwest. shovels ,pan chops go for6 to 10 grand and newer evo.s go for around 10 on up to even 15 depending on the bikes. this i know because i have looked recently. i run an 03 evo long chopper i built and an old 71 shovel i put together and just bought an 08 fatboy. got the fatboy from two bikes i built an sold. first new bike i,ve ever owned an i aint no rich fatcat. work for  living an make my own parts etc. when i can.don,t be scared of older bikes ; just know you,ll have to keep up with them. sounds like you,ll come out better financialy on the 93 an lettin the roadking go.i,d say look at the 93 close and see there,s no problems and go for it.

I traded off my 57 pan for a 1989 ultra Classic when my folks decided to start riding and touring more. It was nice to spend time with them, but that Ultra Classic was boring as hell. Mom crashed, she healed up, bought another bike, rode 2 seasons and Dad couldnt bare to chance loosing her so they sold the bikes. I traded off the 89 Ultra for a 1981 FLH Bobber, and Im happy as can be. Lots more maintenence, but the fun is now back in riding.
That 93 evo will be close to maint. free. Like Clint said, just check it over frequently and keep the oil clean and you should be OK. I had 87,000 miles on that 89 Ultra when I traded it off and it was maintenence free. I did put an S&S carb on it, and an ignition unit, but thats all in 3 years I had it. I beat that thing alot, 5 gear burnouts frequently. It took it.
